Understanding Domain Names & Web Hosting

A domain name is a web address used to reference the location of your website on the Internet.

Instead of typing in a long 12 digit number, we have the luxury of typing in easily remembered words. A domain name provider acts as a big telephone book for the Internet, matching addresses we type into our browser to the long 12 digit numbers known as IP addresses.

You may purchase your own domain name from a domain name provider, or rely on IdeaBank to purchase your domain name on your behalf.

Your website is not located on the same computer or server as your domain name. If you are an IdeaBank client, your website will reside on our servers in Melbourne or Perth. Website storage space is required on our servers to store your website. Bandwidth is also needed, which is a measure of the downloads of your web-pages by your visitors.

IdeaBank can manage your web hosting and domain name as part of our IdeaBank Partnership Package.

However, if you already have a domain name, you will need to give us access in order to configure your domain to point to our servers (or we can liaise with your IT person).

If you already have website or email infrastructure in place in your business, please let us know so we can discuss with you how to integrate your new website into your existing services
